The Day We Lost the Wheelbarrow

Esther Castle and Tiree Taylor
Presented by Summerhall Arts in partnership with Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh and Summerhall

Feb 21, 2024 - Feb 25, 2024

Esther Castle and Tiree Taylor’s ‘The Day We Lost the Wheelbarrow’ exhibition is an exploratory conversation between the two artists’ experience of illness which they faced during childhood. As they move forward into adulthood, both artists reflect on the disarray and confusion they experienced at that time, aiming to unravel their warped childlike perspectives through utilizing storytelling and focusing on the curious.

Centred on themes of growth, lack of control and repair, both artists contemplate the space of the garden. However, much we may try to control it, through pruning and cutting out the ‘bad bits’, our attempts are futile as nature will always prevail.

The exhibition marks an inaugural collaboration between the newly founded charitable organisation Summerhall Arts, Edinburgh College of Art (BA Painting) and Summerhall.

Proposals were invited from Final Year painting students at ECA in response to the In Vitro gallery space & the winner selected by Sam Chapman at Summerhall Arts.

The process gave all those participating valuable insight into real life scenarios in regard to the dissemination of their practice, and signifies further partnership between two of Edinburgh’s key artistic generators.
