Mooney works in watercolour. Like no other, his sophisticated use of the medium expresses discipline, skill and control. Concerned with language and imagery, pattern and shape, Mooney begins with a title that often dictates the form of the resultant image. A word becomes an image, images are repeated to become phrases, the phrases become visual paragraphs.

Mooney enjoys visual puns, contradictions and harmonies. Motifs and symbols embellish the themes addressed in his work and often morph into related and repetitive pictorial dialogue. Imbued with wit, Mooney’s work is articulate and intelligent and a delight to spend time with.

This exhibition showcases a selection of watercolour drawings from a body developed between 1980 and 2001, a mere sample of work from the lifelong prolific artist but nevertheless, an insight into his meticulous and continuous practice.
